Controversy Erupts Over Insulting Comments in San Juan

At a rally for former President Donald Trump, a U.S. comedian made insulting statements about Puerto Rico, highlighting the controversial relationship the mogul has with the Caribbean island. Although Puerto Ricans cannot vote in the U.S. presidential elections, the millions of Puerto Ricans living in the United States can participate in the elections.

Tony Hinchcliffe, a comedian who supports Trump, defined Puerto Rico as "a floating island of garbage," which has generated unanimous rejection on the island. Politicians, artists, and leaders from various parties have condemned his words, also recalling Trump's controversial visit to Puerto Rico following Hurricane Maria in 2017.

The Governor of Puerto Rico, Pedro Pierluisi, condemned these comments, pointing out that they reflect the prejudices and racism present in society. Pierluisi has shown support for Kamala Harris, as has the majority of the Puerto Rican population, although there are exceptions like Republican candidate Jenniffer González, who described Hinchcliffe's remarks as despicable.

In this context, Juan Dalmau, a gubernatorial candidate for the Alliance and leader of the Puerto Rican Independence Party, denounced Trump's attitude towards the island and Puerto Ricans. Singers like Ricky Martin have also expressed their rejection through social media, calling for unity and rejecting hatred.

Trump's campaign distanced itself from the comedian's comments, claiming that these do not represent the president's or the campaign's opinion. Despite Puerto Rico residents not voting in U.S. elections, general elections will take place on November 5 on the island, including a symbolic ballot to express preferences regarding the presidency.

Puerto Ricans will elect a governor, resident commissioner, representatives, senators, and mayors in these elections, as well as express their opinions on the island's political status. Puerto Rico, as a Free Associated State with the U.S., has a certain degree of autonomy, but matters like defense and foreign relations are the responsibility of Washington.

Due to the importance of U.S. elections on the island, artists like Residente have called to defeat Trump at the polls. With diverse political opinions, Puerto Ricans are preparing to express their voice and vote in the upcoming elections, thereby demonstrating the relevance of the political situation both in Puerto Rico and in the United States.
