A note from the Puerto Rican newspaper El Nuevo Día reported that Panama or Mexico could come to the rescue for the 2026 Caribbean Series, after the Caribbean Professional Baseball Confederation (CBPC) announced on Monday that three of its member countries would not attend the event if Venezuela remained as its host for next February.
The Caribbean Series was originally scheduled to be held in the Venezuelan capital, Caracas, but the CBPC announced on Monday that Puerto Rico, Mexico, and the Dominican Republic declined to participate in that country due to "external situations beyond their control."
Although the Caribbean organization was brief in its statement, it clearly refers to the political, economic, and diplomatic tension between the United States and Venezuela.
Although it did not state it categorically in its Monday press release, the Confederation did imply that it will move the host country by announcing that "the CBPC continues to responsibly assess the situation, considering the various alternatives available." Thus, Panama or Mexico could emerge again as emergency hosts. Panama did this in 2019, when Venezuela (Barquisimeto) was the scheduled host, but the tournament had to be moved at the last minute due to internal political tensions in the South American country.
